Kevin Behan has been picked by a production company to shoot the pilot of a television show which will explore his training method, Natural Dog Training (NDT). NDT is currently looking for four individual families and their dogs to be featured in the pilot episode, but whose journey with their pets will eventually be showcased throughout the season.

The idea for the show came from the apparent lack of long-term training information currently available in television programs today. Instead of featuring numerous dogs per episode and then moving on to a new group, Kevin will explore only a few dogs with problem behaviors and over an extended period of time. “It’s really hard to truly understand your dog’s behavior when you only see the quick-fixes, especially with how they are currently discussed on television. What appears to work in the moment, often doesn’t in the long run,” Kevin Behan explained. “What I hope to accomplish with this new series, is to give viewers, and the families I work with, a step-by-step approach that really chronicles what you can expect to see throughout your dog’s life. A lot of people out there are experiencing a lot of the same issues, so I think this has the potential to be incredibly informative.” Kevin went on to explain that his program will also document the journey each person must take in confronting their dog’s behavior. Says Trisha Selbach, a former client of Kevin’s and now the company’s event coordinator, “Having a dog with problem behaviors is more than just learning how to ‘treat’ the dog. There is so much we can learn about what these dogs are going through just by discovering what we – the owners – are feeling. It really is quite amazing, something I’ve seen time and time again with Kevin, and is also something we think needs to be explored.”

NDT is currently seeking these four families with problem dogs who wish to participate in the series. For consideration, NDT is asking for brief clips via email, or on DVD, which can be mailed to their offices. Any video that displays your dog’s behavior and/or your explanation of the predicament will suffice. Please contact Trisha Selbach for more information on how to submit your clip, as well as any further questions about the program.

About Kevin Behan:

Kevin Behan is a veteran police-dog trainer, author of Natural Dog Training, and is the nation’s foremost leader in dog rehabilitation. Originally trained under the dominance theory by his father, John Behan, who pioneered the use of trained dogs outside the military and was one of the first in America to make dog training a career, Kevin came to understand that what made the modern dog adaptable and trainable was not the dominance hierarchy as taught to him, but the dog’s ability to work as a cooperative group member in the hunt. After training thousands of dogs for both aggression and obedience, as well as bomb-sniffing and other security forces, he established his own kennel, Canine Arts, and the Natural Dog Training method. Since then, he has continued to transform the way people are looking at their pets, and has saved hundreds of dogs from being put to sleep. He has since relocated his training grounds to Newfane, Vermont, where he is currently working on his next book, Your Dog is Your Mirror, to be published by New World Library in 2010.
